Lacy O'Neal completed the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program in Thomas County during the Spring of 2018. Below she talks about the impact that this program has had on her and how it has helped her launch her flower shop, Purdy Petals.

Q: Describe your business and how it began since participating in the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program.

A: Prior to participating in the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program, my business was only something that I had dreamed about doing. Since the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program, my dreams have taken flight and I have created my business from the ground up. Today, my business is a fully functioning flower shop, called Purdy Petals, that is proud to serve the Colby, Kansas community. Purdy Petals offers a wide range of products for the community including fresh cut flowers, floral arrangements, gift items, home décor, and so much more. I strive to make customer service my top priority. If I can make someone’s day by doing something as simple as bringing them flowers and showing I care, then my day has been a success. The Ice House Entrepreneurship Program inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and pursue my dream. The program provided me with the basic tools and networking opportunities that I needed to start my business.

Q: What were your key takeaways from participating?

A: Two key points that I took away from the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program include the importance of networking and perseverance. Throughout the development of my business I have had many questions, and without reaching out to others that could answer my questions my business would not be where it is today. As a business owner, I strive to learn something new every day and I feel the best way to learn is to ask questions. I feel that continually pushing myself and my business will be what sets my business apart. In addition to networking, I have also learned how to persevere for what you want. Starting a business doesn’t happen overnight. It takes a lot of patience and hard work. There is so many little details that others might not even notice but are truly necessary for a structurally sound business to operate.

Q: What are your plans to grow your business in the future?

A: My goals for the future of Purdy Petals include becoming the destination of choice for all of my community’s floral needs. I also hope to offer a unique shopping experience by providing products that are not usually found in our area. The final goal that I have set is to provide floral workshops for others to attend to learn floral techniques.

Q: How do you think the entrepreneurial mindset will help you to move forward?

A: As a business owner, I want to continue to learn each day and push myself and my business to be the best it can be. I feel that by setting goals for myself and my business I will be able to continue to grow not only personally but also entrepreneurially.
