Lily Beach competed in the 2017-2018 YEC Series at her local Douglas County competition. She placed first at that event. Since then, she has started selling her products all around the local area. Below she talks about how this program has impacted her as an entrepreneur.
Q: Describe your business and how it's grown since participating in YEC.
A: I am the founder of Dogs Unleashed where we primarily specialize in the creation of beautifully handcrafted dog collars, developed to fit the dog owner and their pooches' personality. Through our online website you can digitally create a dog collar to fit all of your specifications, from the strength of the webbing to the fabric, buckles, custom identification tags, and even additional add-ons that we created after participating in the YEC competition. These add-ons include spikes, reflective tapes, and we are currently developing easy to use slip-on bows, flowers, and bow-ties. Since participating in the YEC competition we are having major success. Sales are starting to skyrocket in our retailers Country Meadow Boarding Kennel and Hilltop Veterinary Clinic. People are starting to pass the word on to others, and on multiple occasions I have been stopped by others asking where to purchase a Dogs Unleashed collar.
Q: What were your key takeaways from participating?
A: From participating in YEC, I learned many key characteristics that are vital for surviving in the business world, and I learned the importance of task organizing and the drive to get things done. I also learned that even though I may be young, I can still create a business, and if I work hard enough, that business can really start to take off and make profit. Since I was little, I never dreamed that entrepreneurship would be the path for me in life, until this competition. Now continuing my business, and growing it to become something even bigger than I imagined, is all that I can think about!
Q: What are your plans to grow your business in the future?
A: For the future, I plan to add to my business. I wish to provide matching leash and collar sets, custom dog leashes, and leather dog collars. I also hope to create dog biscuits, beds, and more. After this competition, I realized that the possibilities of what is to come are endless and I just have to work for them.
