Scott Weinmann attended Destination BootCamp in May of 2017 as part of a group from Atchison participating in the Community Reinvention Program. Below he talks about the impact that this program has had on the growth of his business.
Describe your business and how it's grown since participating in Destination BootCamp.
We actually opened the store about 3 to 4 months after attending the BootCamp. Muddy River Guitars is a guitar centric music store. We focus on mainly mid priced to higher end instruments, which is why I was excited to be able to attend the Destination BootCamp. The business has seen steady month over month growth since opening and I attribute that directly to DBC and being able to bring in customers from a 60-mile radius. Just recently, we added Gibson Guitars acoustic line to our store. We're the only Gibson dealer within a 150 miles’ radius.
What were your key takeaways from participating?
The biggest take away from DBC was a lot to do with the visual presentation of the store. Having attended the BootCamp at a time before the final layout of the store was decided and completed. This allowed us to create a space and a store that was unique not only to the area but in general for music stores. Jon also really made me think about what things would set me a part from the competition and make the store unique. Because of this, we were able to position our self as a guitar store that hand-picks the products on the walls/shelves. We didn't allow ourselves to bring in a bunch of brands and products. Instead we found brands with products we believed in and weren't readily available in the area.
What are your plans to grow your business in the future?
I hope with in three years to be able to expand into a larger space and on a street level. Currently, I'm on a second floor in an old building without an elevator. While it looks cool, it's not convenient for older customers. I also hope to add a few more brands to my product line up, in fact I hope that I become a store the well-known vendors seek out and ask me to carry them! I'd love to add a couple more employees over the next 12-18 months.
