How to Start a Fab Lab from Ground Zero

By: Anne Dewvall

Fab Lab

Have you wanted to bring a makerspace or fab lab to your community? I hear this wish often when I visit with economic development directors and entrepreneurs across the state. A maker space is quickly becoming a community must-have. This winter, Fab Lab ICC is offering a one-of-a-kind Community Boot Camp in Independence where attendees will learn how to start a fab lab from scratch that can support your community’s entrepreneurship goals and makers. The Fab Lab ICC will use their own, award-winning experience to show how to establish an innovative makerspace without a huge capital investment in any community. What’s not to love about that?

The Fab Lab ICC is also the only maker space in the world that applies the entrepreneurial mindset philosophy (from the Ice House Entrepreneurship program that we love at NetWork Kansas) to the hands-on creative makerspace environment. It’s a powerful combination. Jim Correll and the Fab Lab ICC team have learned how to do this, and they are sharing their knowledge and lessons learned. I think it’s a tremendous opportunity to hear firsthand their inspiring story AND pick up the practical knowledge to DIY your own makerspace.

Some of my favorite Boot Camp topics include:

  • Concepting: You Don't Need a 5-Year Plan, Let Constituent Needs Be Your Guide

  • QuickStart Basics: A Shortlist of Essential Tools & Equipment

  • If You Build It: They Will Come and You Can Expect the Unexpected

Read more about what the Boot Camp will cover.

The Boot Camp is in Independence, Kansas February 20-22, 2018. Registration is open now - but don’t wait long, the early bird discount to save $500 ends December 31, 2017.
